Common Oral Surgeries That Can Help Restore a Healthy Smile

As oral maxillofacial surgeons, we can perform a variety of oral surgery treatments focusing on reconstructive surgery of the face, facial trauma surgery, the oral cavity, head and neck, mouth, and jaws. We strive to help you regain your dental health and facial appearance. There are many reasons why a surgical treatment might be needed.

For example, the following circumstances may require oral surgery:

  • Teeth with extensive tooth decay
  • Badly broken, impacted or missing teeth
  • Wisdom tooth extraction to prevent cavities, bone loss and other potential issues
  • Progressive gum disease
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD)
  • Diminished jawbone density
  • Sleep apnea
  • Cancer of the tongue, mouth, lips, gums, salivary glands, tonsils and the pharynx (throat to the windpipe)

Our surgical team can help you get your healthy smile back with any of these common surgeries:

  • Pulling one or more teeth: While saving a tooth is often the goal to preserve your oral health, there are situations where extracting a tooth may be indicated. You might have severe tooth decay, active periodontitis, a dental injury or problems with your wisdom teeth. In some cases, your tooth can be removed to make way for a follow-up restoration like dentures or some other prosthetic appliance.
  • Dental bone graft surgery: If you have sustained jawbone loss, a bone graft can remedy this. Your tooth roots stimulate the nerves residing inside the jaw, nudging your brain to send nutrients so that your jaw will stay healthy and strong. If it has been a while since a tooth was lost, jawbone deterioration will likely have occurred. A dental bone graft can help give your jaw the necessary volume and density it needs to support a dental implant down the road.
  • Dental implant surgery: These proven tooth replacement restorations are considered the most reliable and long-lasting choice. Biocompatible posts are installed into the jaw, acting as tooth roots and protecting bone density, after which they can be completed with a dental crown, bridge, or denture.
  • Periodontal surgery: Gum disease treatment may involve pulling gum tissue away from teeth to access and clean tooth roots and clearing out harmful bacterial plaque beneath the gums before suturing the tissue in place. Should your gums recede from periodontitis, a gum graft can be done to reinforce the lost tissue area using donor tissue.
  • Oral cancer and infections: We can remove malignant tumors from oral cancer or severe infection of the oral cavity.
  • Orthognathic surgery: This corrective surgery fixes problems within the jaw. By correcting your misalignment and facial imbalances, you can once again chew normally while lessening issues with your temporomandibular joints.
  • Sleep apnea surgery: If you currently suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and have not found relief with oral appliance therapy or a CPAP device, surgery can be done to open the airways properly and restore airflow to make breathing easier.
  • Cleft lip and palate repair: Some babies have a cleft lip (opening in their upper lip) or a cleft palate (opening in the roof of their mouth). These surgeries can restore your child’s normal eating ability, so they can look normal and have proper speech patterns as they get older.
