Surgical Instructions

Some of our procedures at MSL Surgery involve intravenous, or IV, sedation. Before your scheduled surgery with Dr. Frank Paletta and Dr. Mo Banki, we ask that you follow the following instructions: Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your scheduled appointment time. Do not smoke for at least 12 hours prior to surgery. Ideally, patients can benefit from slowly cutting back on smoking up to the day of their surgery. You must be accompanied by an adult who can drive you home after your surgery. Avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours after your surgery is complete. Wear loosely-fitted clothes to your appointment. Typically, a t-shirt and flat, closed-toed shoes are best. Do no wear flip flops. Do not wear oral or facial jewelry. Also avoid wearing large amounts of makeup, lipstick, or nail polish. Notify our office if you have contracted a sore throat, cold, or stomach ache. Notify our office of any regular oral medications. When you receive dental implants from MSL Surgery, our oral surgeons will discuss possible side effects and post-operative instructions before your procedure. However, for additional reference, we have provided the instructions below: After your oral surgery in Warwick, Rhode Island, or North Attleboro, Massachusetts, it is important not to disturb the surgical site. When you receive dental implants, avoid rinsing or touching the wound for the remainder of your surgery day. As you heal, you may experience many side effects, including: Bleeding: it is normal to experience some bleeding for 24 hours after surgery. To control blood flow, gently bite down on a gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues after 24 hours, contact our office. Swelling: minor swelling is normal. To treat swelling, you can place an ice pack on your cheek, over the implant site. Apply as frequently as possible for the first 36 hours. Diet: after surgery, it is important to drink lots of fluids. Avoid eating and drinking hot items. At least for the remainder of your day of surgery, eat soft foods. You may continue a diet of soft foods after your first day, but try to return to your regular diet as early as possible. Pain: our oral surgeons will provide pain killers after your surgery. Follow the medication instructions. Do not take more than the instructed doses. Antibiotics: some procedures will require antibiotics to prevent infection. Take them as prescribed. Oral Hygiene: it is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene after surgery. After surgery, you will receive a Peridex Oral Rinse. Use this once on your first night, then after breakfast and before bed every day until it is gone. Rinse for 30 seconds. Also, rinse with warm salt water 4-5 times daily. Continue brushing your teeth regularly, but be gentle. Activity: limit physical activity until you are directed that you can return to normal activity. Engaging in too much physical activity early on can cause excessive bleeding or pain. Wearing your Prosthesis: for a minimum of 10 days after surgery, avoid wearing flippers and partial or full dentures. Our doctors will discuss this more in your pre-operative consultation. After treating an impacted tooth, it is important that you follow any post-operative instructions from Dr. Frank Paletta and Dr. Mo Banki. To help your recovery go smoothly, we recommend that you review and following the additional surgical instructions: Do not touch the surgical site. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30 minutes to help stop any post-operative bleeding. It is normal to experience bleeding for the first 24 hours. Apply ice packs to swollen areas for the first 36 hours. Be sure to drink lots of fluids, but avoid hot ones. Eat only soft foods for the remainder of your surgery day. Take pain medication only as directed. Rinse and clean your mouth after eating; you should rinse with warm salt water at least 6 times a day. Limit physical activity until you feel comfortable retuning to your normal routine. When a tooth is removed, it is important to care for the extractions site, as it can be highly susceptible to damage or infection. Following your procedure, Dr. Frank Paletta and Dr. Mo Banki will have you bite down on a gauze pad for at least 30 minutes. This will help stop any bleeding. It may take several gauzes, in 30-minute intervals, to make the bleeding stop completely. Once the bleeding has stopped, do not disturb the extraction site. Avoid aggressively rinsing your mouth or drinking with a straw. Also avoid alcohol, smoking, and tobacco for the first 72 hours. Keep your exercise to a minimum, and keep it low-key. Tooth extractions can often cause some pain and swelling. To reduce swelling, apply ice packs to the affected area(s) for the first 36 hours. Take pain medications as directed. If it does not decrease your pain, contact our office. After 24 hours, try carrying out your normal dental routine. Brush and floss gently at least one time daily. By keeping a clean extraction site, you can help shorten your recovery time and avoid post-op problems. Removing multiple teeth at once can present slightly more attentive post-operative instructions. It is important to ensure that each extraction site remains clean so that your recovery is both quick and problem-free. Following your surgery, Dr. Frank Paletta and Dr. Mo Banki will have you bite down on gauze in 30-minute intervals until any bleeding stops. You can also bite down on a moist tea bag. If bleeding persists after several gauze pads have been used, contact our practice. Oozing around dentures and prostheses is normal. If you experience swelling, regularly apply ice packs in the first 36 hours. If you experience minor pain or discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication. However, if your pain increases and becomes severe, our oral surgeons can prescribe pain killers. Drink a minimum of six glasses of liquid throughout the rest of your surgery day. Avoid drinking with a straw. Do not rinse your mouth for the first day; afterwards, use warm salt water every 4 hours. Begin by eating soft foods and liquids. Our doctors will help you know how long you should wait before returning to a normal diet. Although wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure, it can be complex, and it requires attentive care both during and after surgery. At MSL Surgery, Drs. Frank Paletta and Mo Banki will review at-home care instructions for after your wisdom teeth are removed. We ask that you review these as necessary to properly care for your mouth. Immediately Following Surgery Keep the gauze in place for at least 30 minutes, after which is should be thrown away. Avoid aggressive rinsing around and touching the surgical site. Take any prescribed medications as directed, and take them as early as possible to avoid greater discomfort. Wait to engage in regular physical activity until you feel comfortable doing so. Use ice packs to help reduce swelling. Following surgery, you may experience several side effects as you recover. Some of these include: Bleeding: some bleeding can be expected after surgery, as well as minor oozing or red saliva. To lessen the bleeding, place a gauze over the treatment site and bite down for about half an hour. If bleeding continues, bite down on another gauze, or a moistened tea bag. If bleeding still persists, contact our office. Swelling: swelling around the mouth, eyes, and cheeks is normal after surgery. It may take 2-3 days for swelling to reach its peak and dissipating. Apply ice packs to the swelling areas as consistently as bearable for the first 36 hours. After 36 hours, apply moist heat. Pain: our oral surgeons will provide medication instructions for pain relief. Follow these instructions exactly. Diet: only drink liquids for the first several hours, but do not use a straw. Avoid eating on the surgical sites, and eat only soft, high-calorie, and high-protein foods for a few days. Our doctors will give additional specific diet instructions prior to your surgery. Do not skip meals, and try to drink 5-6 full glasses of liquid a day. Keep the Mouth Clean: do not use any sort of mouth rinse for the remainder of your surgery day. Gently brush your teeth, and rinse carefully. On the day following surgery, rinse your mouth 5-6 times day with warm salt water, particularly after eating. Discoloration: after swelling, you may experience some slight bruising. This may not occur until 2-3 days after surgery. To reduce discoloration, apply moist heat. Antibiotics: take antibiotics only as directed, as they will help you prevent infection. Nausea and Vomiting: if you experience any nausea or vomiting after your surgery, do not take oral medicine. After at least one hour, sip drinks that can calm your stomach, such as Coke, ginger ale, or mild tea. Once the nausea dissipates and the vomiting stops, try nibbling on solid foods and take any prescribed medicine.
